Lessons learned from deployment of UV advanced oxidation processes in the US

A practical framework for adopting UV-AOP in potable reuse — covering water quality, oxidant choice, and de-risking design with demonstration skids.

Overview

As water scarcity and aging infrastructure push utilities toward potable reuse, advanced oxidation has become essential for meeting strict disinfection and contaminant-removal standards. UV advanced oxidation (UV-AOP) stands out for its low cost of ownership and its ability to be tuned across treatment goals, but adopting it raises practical questions about water quality, oxidant choice, and design confidence.

Xylem and Water Online co-hosted this webinar, which introduces UV-AOP for advanced treatment and potable reuse, drawing on real-world installations using both hydrogen peroxide and free chlorine. You’ll learn where UV-AOP is the best fit, where alternatives like ozonation may perform better, and how to handle common challenges such as influent water quality and UVT monitoring. The session also previews a new approach to de-risking design: purpose-built demonstration skids that let utilities see full-scale performance before committing.

Viewers will leave with a practical framework for bringing UV-AOP into their own reuse programs.

About the presenters

Dr. Uwe Hübner

Senior Process Engineer, Water Reuse & AOP, Xylem

Uwe is a senior process engineer at Xylem responsible for treatment solutions in Water Reuse & Advanced Oxidation since 2023. He holds a master's degree and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany. Before he joined Xylem, he served as Associate Professor at the Technical University of Munich, leading the research group “Advanced Water Treatment” for more than 9 years. Uwe is a member of various technical committees and has published more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles in the field of advanced water treatment and reuse.

Anthony Pimentel

P.E., Reuse and AOP Treatment Specialist, Xylem

Anthony is a treatment specialist at Xylem, primarily focused on Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection and advanced oxidation process (AOP) treatment solutions for water reuse and drinking water. Anthony is involved with technical design, process engineering, and research for AOP, UV, Ozone, and other advanced treatment technologies and supports water treatment projects across North America. Anthony has worked on 50+ UV projects across the US and has vast experience with water treatment facility startup and commissioning. Anthony also serves on various committees in the water industry, including IUVA, IOA, and WEF.
