The Upper Gwynedd Township, Pennsylvania wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) which treats residential waste (70 percent) and industrial waste (30 percent) was struggling to maintain performance during peak wet weather flows. The facility was designed to treat an average daily flow of 5.7 million gallons per day (MGD) and a maximum monthly flow of 6.5 MGD with a peak hourly flow of 12 MGD.

Ion exchange services remove groundwater contaminants
California Water Service Company had acquired another water company with approximately 100 connections, in Porterville, California, located in a remote agricultural area of the Central Valley. Their annual well testing had shown levels of nitrate at or near the Maximum Contamination Level (MCL) of 45 ppm and perchlorate was found in the groundwater at levels above the Public Health Goal (PHG) of 10 ppb. A treatment system was needed to remove both these contaminants to ensure quality potable water for the local community.

Less algae equates to better water quality
In response to changing water quality requirements, the water treatment plant was taking corrective actions to ensure it was producing the best water possible. Excessive algae can clog intake screens, cause pH levels to fluctuate, increase chlorine demand, and negatively affect the taste and smell of water. One of the goals of its latest water improvement project was to reduce algae build-up in its settling basins.
