Xylem's Smith-Blair 973 Fabricated Steel Dismantling Joint is a restrained, telescoping joint with integral mechanical joint restraint, engineered specifically for Ductile Iron and Steel pipe systems. Combining the serviceability of a dismantling design with the security of a wedge-style restraint gland, the 973 makes it straightforward to install, service, and remove valves, meters, pumps, and other flanged fittings without the need for separate restraint hardware.

Key Product Features

  • Fabricated steel dismantling joint with integral restraint
  • For installing valves, meters, and other flanged fittings on Ductile Iron or Steel pipe
  • Telescopes and adjusts to varying dimensions
  • Allows some deflection for misaligned assemblies
  • No special tools required
  • Made to order, usually in only a few days
  • Meets applicable AWWA C219 standards

Xylem's Smith-Blair 973 Dismantling Joint is a fabricated steel dismantling joint with integral restraint, designed for joining and restraining flanged fittings, pumps, meters, valves, and other miscellaneous flanged service equipment on Ductile Iron and Steel pipe. Unlike a non-restrained dismantling joint that relies on external anchoring, the 973 incorporates a mechanical joint-style restraint gland directly into the assembly, delivering thrust restraint and telescoping adjustability in a single, field-ready unit.

The 973 is built from a combination of materials engineered for field performance. The flanged adapter body is Carbon Steel per ASTM A53, ASTM A283 Gr. C, or Carbon Steel with a minimum yield of 30,000 PSI. The restraint gland is 65-45-12 Ductile Iron per ASTM A536. Wedges are single-tooth Ductile Iron, heat treated for Ductile Iron pipe applications. Actuating bolts are 60-40-18 Ductile Iron per ASTM A536, and breakaway nuts are Carbon Steel. The spool weldment flange is Carbon Steel per ASTM A36, meeting AWWA C207 Class D 150#. Spool weldment sleeves in 3"–6" nominal sizes are Carbon Steel per ASTM A513 or A53; 8" and larger use Carbon Steel per ASTM A283C, all finished with Flexi-Coat® fusion-bonded epoxy per AWWA C213.

The Smith-Blair 973 is available in pipe sizes from 3" through 12" nominal. Working pressure is rated at 150 PSI. The telescoping spool weldment design allows the spool to travel through the sleeve weldment, accommodating field variation in laying length.
