The Santa Clara Valley Water District (the District) manages an integrated water resources system that includes the supply of clean, safe water, flood protection, and stewardship of streams on behalf of Santa Clara County's 1.8 million residents. The district effectively manages 10 dams and surface water reservoirs, three water treatment plants, an advanced recycled water purification center, a state-of-the-art water quality laboratory, nearly 400 acres (162 hectares) of groundwater recharge ponds, and more than 275 miles (443 km) of streams.

Ultraviolet disinfection safeguards the City of Berea’s water supply
First settled in 1836, the City of Berea, Ohio gained acclaim as being the source for dimensioned stone formed from locally quarried sandstone, notably grindstones. The grindstones were shipped to Cleveland by oxcart and, as demand grew, later by a purpose-built railroad to the Big Four Railroad across the Midwest. Now many of the former quarry pits are better known as Baldwin Lake, Wallace Lake and Coe Lake.

The water supply system in Zurich supplies approx. 850,000 people in the city of Zurich and in 67 nearby municipalities with high-quality drinking water at all times. On average, 151,200 m3 of water are consumed each day, the entire water supply network is 1,542 km long (Figures: 2010).

Southern California water utility consults Xylem for disinfection of potable water
Located in Southern California, this water utility uses wells to store water. These same wells are also used for fire protection. which is especially critical during the summer months. The supply covers about 10,000 customer connections with chloraminated water for residual disinfection, with chlorine and ammonia boosting in various locations.

Stillorgan Reservoir disinfection upgrade
Whilst residual chlorination is relied upon to provide protection of drinking water in distribution systems, it is increasingly being supplemented by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation as a primary disinfectant for drinking water treatment. As a chemical-free process it avoids many of the issues associated with hazardous oxidising disinfectants and does not generate disinfection by-products. It is also effective against microbiological pollutants such as protozoa, that are resistant to chlorine.

Temporary treatment of drinking water for a municipality
The consulting engineer for a municipal water utility contacted Carbonair to solve a problem that their client was having with several of its drinking water production wells. Low levels of Vinyl Chloride (VC) were detected in several of its drinking water wells. They needed to treat this water on a temporary basis until they could either construct new wells or build a larger permanent treatment plant to handle the problem.

Updating London’s drinking water network
A UK water supply company serves a population of approximately 675,000 consisting of homes and businesses in Surrey, Sussex and Kent and is a key part of London’s drinking water network. The largest works in Kent, which takes raw water from a reservoir that is recharged in winter by abstraction from the River Eden. The original works capacity was 35Ml/d and it is currently undergoing a phased uprate.

The Weaverville Community Services District (CSD) is a publicly owned municipal water agency located in Weaverville, California. The facility needed to retrofit an existing building and switch from a gas feed system to an onsite hypochlorite system. The conversion from gas to hypochlorite is a trend being seen in many Northern California districts as regulations on chlorine gas increase.

UV disinfection ensures compliance and improves water quality
Irish Water was created by the Irish Government in 2013 and supplies drinking water to the whole of the Republic of Ireland. The company is investing over €65 million as part of their National Disinfection Programme involving the upgrade and standardisation of disinfection systems currently installed in over 800 sites including water treatment plants, pumping stations and reservoirs.

Vermont Town of 450 Removes PFOA From Drinking Water Well
The source of the contaminated water was located approximately 250 meters away from the municipal well, at a former industrial site. Upon learning of the elevated test results, the state issued a “do not drink” order to the 450 residents served by the municipal water supply until the water source could pass quality testing again.
