Beyond Failure Prevention - The Benefits of Pipeline Monitoring for Large-Diameter PCCP Assets
By implementing a proactive management program, utilities can virtually eliminate the risk of failure within their PCCP inventory. Even utilities that have not experienced a large-diameter PCCP failure, can realize significant capital program savings by managing these assets in place of replacement.

Beyond the Wires
While evaluating wire breaks are an important part of PCCP management, it is important to acknowledge additional factors beyond wire breaks. By acknowledging additional condition factors, limitations of wire break assessment, and considering other rehabilitation approaches, there may be a more sustainable PCCP management approach.

Bioxide® solution reduces odors, corrosion, and complaints
Xylem was contacted by a Mid-Atlantic Water Authority to propose an odor control solution at one of their pump stations. The Authority was treating the odors with a sodium hypochlorite (bleach) solution to varying degrees of success. Downstream hydrogen sulfide levels in the atmosphere were the primary contributors to odor complaints, reports of corrosion, and worker safety issues.

Bringing modern efficiency to a historic leisure landmark
Working closely with FT Leisure, Xylem supplied Lowara pumps with integrated Hydrovar X drives, delivering a compact, energy-efficient solution that reduced control panel requirements through pump-mounted variable speed control. The approach simplified system design and installation while helping keep the refurbishment project on schedule. -

Accoustic Doppler Current Meters
But behind the massive tunnels and the huge catch basins is a system just as staggering – the SMART Project’s nerve system, a network of flood detection equipment and automated management machinery linked by a Supervisory Data Acquisition and Control (SCADA) brain that uses the information it gathers to automatically engage flood management gates and pumps.

Continuous Data Keeps Brazilian Ports’ Business Flowing
HidroMares has installed its SISMO systems at seven port complexes around Brazil, from ocean terminals in the south to an inland river port in the Amazon basin. At the heart of each system is a SonTek acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP), which provides current velocity and direction data throughout the water column, as well as water level.
