For many years, maintaining efficient aeration control was a challenge for the 24 MGD Muncie, Indiana, Water Pollution Control Facility (WPCF). A manually operated system combined with severe mixing-limited conditions resulted in over-aeration and wasted energy. The plant alleviated this problem with automated control and Pulsed Aeration, allowing it to satisfy the needs of the bacteria and mix basin contents while expending less energy.

A deep-tunnel pumping system for Columbus, Ohio’s OARS project uses adjustable-speed Flygt pumps to manage extreme head variations and efficiently dewater a 215-foot-deep, high-capacity sewer tunnel after major flow events.

Before deciding on the 4320s, Kennedy Industries along with YCUA operations and maintenance personnel performed an extensive energy study of the aeration mixers.

The North Columbus Resource Facility recently completed a $12-million replacement of its settled water filtration, removing the existing Wheeler filters, their three-part media and 10-inch poured-concrete underdrains, which were no longer efficient. Prior to the filter rehabilitation, the utility’s backwash procedure consisted of a hydraulic-only backwash where the high-rate wash cycle lasted up to 20 minutes. Backwashing each dual cell filter used 150,000 to 200,000 gallons of water. The filters then operated up to an hour in rewash or filter-to-waste operation to reach the desired output of <0.09 Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU).

During an inspection, it became clear that one major culvert – 140 feet long, 15 feet tall and running under heavily traveled Route 30 – had outlived its expected life. The 10-guage corrugated steel structure was deteriorated and needed to be repaired – with as little disruption to Route 30 traffic patterns as possible.
