Xylem's Smith-Blair 972 Heavy Duty Dismantling Joint provides a restrained solution for valve, pump, meter and other flanged fitting installations. The product makes it easy to install a flanged product in a new or existing setting, telescoping and adjusting to varying dimensions while allowing some deflection for misaligned assemblies. Joints are restrained when tie rods are used to secure the flanged fittings, making other joint restraints unnecessary.

Key Product Features

  • Installs valve, pump, meter and other flanged fitting installations
  • Meets Applicable AWWA C219 Standards
  • No special tools required
  • Made to order, usually in only a few days
  • A wide variety of types and sizes available
  • Telescopes and adjusts to varying dimensions
  • Allows some deflection for misaligned assemblies
  • Product makes it easy to install a flanged product in a new or existing setting
  • Easy to install flanged gaskets with this fitting; no prying apart mated flanges necessary
  • Joints are restrained when tie rods are used to secure the flanged fittings, making other joint restraints unnecessary
  • Ideal to use with flanged fittings like butterfly valves and pumps that require being pulled out of service for maintenance

The Smith-Blair 972 heavy duty restrained dismantling joint is designed for valve, pump, meter and other flanged fitting installations where secure, restrained connections are required.

Where the 971 relies on external anchoring, the 972 provides built-in pipe restraint through a robust through-stud system, making it the right choice when thrust loads are a concern and a separate restraint method isn't practical.

Every component of the 972 is specified for heavy duty performance. The pusher flange is Carbon Steel per ASTM A36 and/or A283C, finished with Flexi-Coat® fusion-bonded epoxy, with a bolt hole pattern matching AWWA C207 150# drilling. Sleeve weldment for sleeves in 3"–5" sizes are Carbon Steel per ASTM A513 or A53; 6" and larger use Carbon Steel per ASTM A283C, and all finished with Flexi-Coat® fusion-bonded epoxy,

The Smith-Blair 972 is available in nominal pipe sizes from 3" and larger, accommodating any flanged pipe or fitting, including Steel, Ductile Iron, and Cast Iron. Working pressure is rated at 175 PSI for 3"–12" nominal sizes and 150 PSI for 12" and larger; higher working pressure designs are available upon request. The telescoping spool weldment design allows the spool to travel through the sleeve weldment, and the assembly accommodates some angular deflection for misaligned assemblies. Nominal sizes 18"–24" feature spool weldment sleeves expanded larger than through-bore at the flange end only; all other sizes are through-bore design.

The Smith-Blair 972 is certified to NSF/ANSI 61 and NSF/ANSI 372, meets applicable portions of AWWA C219, and its Flexi-Coat® fusion-bonded epoxy coating meets the requirements of AWWA C213. A broad range of options is available to meet your specific project requirements, including 304SS or 316SS construction, Type 304 or Type 316 Stainless Steel hardware with fluoropolymer-coated nuts to prevent galling, alternative gasket materials (Viton, EPDM, etc.), anode connectors, higher working pressure designs, custom flange-to-flange lengths, any industry-standard flange, and reducing joints.

The Smith-Blair 972 is constructed from high-quality materials to ensure long-lasting performance. The flanged adapter body is manufactured from ASTM A53, ASTM A283 Gr. C or Carbon Steel having a minimum yield of 30,000 PSI. The follower flange is made from Ductile Iron per ASTM A536, Steel section per ASTM A576GR1020HR, or Carbon Steel having a minimum yield of 30,000 PSI. Gaskets are Nitrile (Buna-N), flanges meet AWWA C207 standards, and the spigot is ASTM A53, ASTM A512 or Carbon Steel having a minimum yield of 30,000 PSI. Studs conform to ASTM A325 or A307, while tie rods are manufactured to ASTM A 193 GR B7 specifications. The finish is Flexi-Coat®, Fusion-Bonded Epoxy Finish.
